Hurloon Minotaur by PhillterUnfiltered Hurloon Minotaur by PhillterUnfiltered
My first practice piece for my MTG portfolio. This creature is actually a usable creature for the first set. His characteristics involve a shamanistic look with a series of tattoos to identify their tribe as well as their place in the tribe.

I wanted to keep this kind of painterly because this is meant to be scaled down for the card size.

I understand some viewers might be into anthro art, however please don't request this to be changed to anthro category (or any other category). I prefer to keep this in the fantasy category.

I like how the tattoos loosely resemble the labyrinth in "Theseus and the Minotaur".

I think that may have been the intent for the original mtg concept. I do like the idea now that you mention it though, That is one of my most favorite greek myths. :)

Is this illustration going to be used in Theros?
This art is awesome! I hope WOTC don't waste it on a crappy creature.

It's not in this theros set. I'm honestly not sure if it's going to be in the expansions or not, that's up to wotc. Whatever the case I am happy they bought the card.

Thank you for the compliment though, I'm glad you like it :).

I have always been a huge fan of the Minotaurs (even though most seem to suck in MTG). I hope this new set they bring them back some. Awesome work! This would be a very beautiful card, and it is nice to see the classic Hurloon back in action. :)

I can't give anything away for the new set. However from interviews and talks at San Diego Comic con they seem to be a lot more prominent.

Thank you for the generous compliments :)

MTG minotaurs have all sorts of different looks. Hurloon minotaurs (Alpha and Beta set) have very long rough fur. If you look at different sets you will see the looks frequently change.

How do you get to this point in art? Seriously, how does this come out of your head? What did you have to do to be able to do something like this? How did you practice, for how long? What inspired you to keep going?

I just don't understand how entire worlds or beings can live inside your head with such detail. It's been something that I've been struggling with - how do you have the patience to put that much effort into it?

What made you fall in love with art?

One last question, you don't have to answer any or all of these - how much money did this make you?

I wish there was a way I could answer most of these =P. A lot of times I find myself asking a lot of questions as well. In the end I just roll with what I feel is the best answer.

The only one I can answer is that I fell in love with art the moment I realized art is not just meant to be art. In way you create your own reality rather than copy this one.

I ask my self all the time what I want to do with my art, but I never get any answers. The questions usually are: Do I want to move forward? Do I want to master this art form? Do I want to spend my life doing this? I think these questions are a little too serious and big to decide on, especially right now. But I get stuck there, I get stuck on the "go big or go home" sort of attitude, and always end up getting impatient and slaughtering the potential that I could have.

I want to progress, but I don't want to spend the time necessary to progress. It's vicious.

You answered the most important question though. I need to understand why artists love to do what they do, because I can't appreciate what I create at the moment. I'm trying to find my love for it, I want/but don't want - I want to find that thing that makes me want to imagine things I've never imagined, and just create because I love to.

But I have yet to find that thing. So I'm stuck in a cycle of dead trees. lol

Thank you for your response.

I'm so happy to see this guy redrawn looking really cool.  You're amazing for doing him.  For other people... Hurloon's Flavor text :

" The minotaurs of the Hurloon Mountains are known for their love of battle. They are also known for their hymns to the dead, sung for friend and foe alike. These hymns can last for days, filling the mountain valleys with their low, haunting sounds."

...as an MTG fan I have to say something at the description though:  Geeze, keep Hurloon Minotaur out of "anthro"... please?  The intended audience is MTG players, not specifically anthro lovers... respect this artists wishes!  Don't delete this wonderful art over a miscat that means close to nothing in the grand scheme of things - its obviously got a ton of views already and he says he wants this in fantasy category, not a ticket to more views via the anthro community.  Calling this "anthro" as opposed to "fantasy" changes how the artist prefers his design to be perceived.  Don't play coy.  We  all know how aspects of the Deviantart anthro community are like...   Anthro art IS fantasy, but ... - why force a fantasy artist to categorize in anthro, necessarily?  Is this level of specifically so important, just so specifically anthro-lovers will particularly end up looking at this?  Don't get me wrong... he's a VERY attractive minotaur for sure, but that's not what's important about this card art.  lol

Thank you for the generous comment, it is very much appreciated :).

I agree completely about the genre change. I took it down the comment in the description so nobody would get offended. The fact of the matter is that anthro art is a genre of it's own (with it's own demographic of fans), some may argue that minotaurs are anthro because the creature itself is human/animal. However, The genre has it's own culture, one in which i'm not a fan of. I highly doubt that they will take it off, but it is kind of disrespectful to the artist to tell them where their art should go... unless there is documentation saying otherwise (ex: have to hold back works for MtG for the sake of NDA).
